Brief Introduction

Ichoku is the Igbo word for parrot. It is also the name of a traditional Igbo griot masquerade known for engaging society through storytelling, music, education, and communal healing. Inspired by this rich cultural heritage, Gerald Eze founded Ichoku Academy as a modern continuation of the ingenious indigenous music tradition embodied by the Ichoku masquerade troupe.

Today, Ichoku Academy uses traditional music as a tool for education and cultural preservation, helping young people develop a deeper understanding of their identity, community, and the symbolic values embedded in Igbo culture. Through its work, the academy is passionately restoring Igbo music to its rightful place within the arts while ensuring that this cultural legacy is passed on to future generations.

Our Scope

We provide holistic education through music, sports, dance, public speaking, and literature, shaping well-rounded individuals who will lead with creativity and cultural pride. We are established physically in our cultural centre in Awka, but run micro-programmes in Nnewi and Enugu. We are projecting to create more centres across Nigeria and Africa at large.

Summer/Holiday Arts Lessons

We offer full-day and half-day music camps for children and people of all ages and skill levels - including beginners!
Summer camps give students an opportunity to focus on one instrument or genre for a whole week or more.

The Ichoku Academy is an amazing initiative geared towards grooming young minds on the practical use of Igbo cultural musical instruments through dance, folk tales, and storytelling.
